HISTORY OF ICE CREAM
Originally invented in China, who knows when, however, we do know it was a delicacy only for the rich in America and Europe in the eighteenth century. It wasn't until 1846, that the hand cranked home ice cream freezer was invented and that it became widely loved and appreciated.
The first wholesale ice cream factory appeared in 1851, in Baltimore. In 1866, William Breyer (his name sounds familiar) started making ice cream in Philadelphia.
The ice cream soda was invented in 1874, in Philadelphia. But it was not until the late 1890's that the ice cream sundae was invented, to get around laws that outlawed the sale of carbonated beverages on Sunday. Apparently, some thought ice cream sodas were sinful.
The first ice cream cone was also invented in the late 1890's, when an ice cream vendor ran out of dishes and asked a nearby waffle maker for help.
Want some more trivia...OK. The most ice cream is eaten (licked) in July, which is National Ice Cream Month.
The most popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan (that surprised me), strawberry, Neapolitan (where do you get that), chocolate chip, and French vanilla.
People in Finland eat the most ice cream in the world (over 42 pints per person a year). New Zealand is second at 30 pints per person a year. The United States comes in at 27 pints.
If you want to collect ice cream memorabilia, then you may want to join the ice cream collectors club called the Ice Screamers, P. O. Box 5387, Lancaster PA 17601. Why "Ice Screamers". It all goes back to the saying:
Ice Cream
You Scream
We all scream for Ice Cream
